The Canon Lodge near the Fish River Canyon reflects its surroundings in a unique manner. The 25 thatched, wooden en suite units are built between huge granite boulders, positioned such that the boulders form part of their structure. Cool, weather-beaten granite walls form a stark contrast to the crisp linen and mosquito nets of the bedrooms. No ceramic wall tiles in the bathrooms: only the criss-cross of erosion patterns in the granite walls. Most of the ingredients of the delicious food served in the restaurant at Canon Lodge have been produced by their Self-Sufficiency Centre.

Canon Lodge is a German name which means Canyon Lodge. The lodge is named after the Fish River Canyon which is very close to the Canon Lodge. The Fish River Canyon is in the greater Richtersveld-Ai-Ais Transfrontier Park in the south of Namibia.

If you travel directly east you will get to Grunau where you can choose between Grunau Country House for self-catering ( self contained ) accommodation at Grunau Lodge. Grunau is only about an hours drive from Canon Lodge. Slight further and more to the south is the Orange River Lodge offering self-catering ( self contained ) accommodation in Noordoewer near the South African border and 3 hours drive from Canon Lodge in the South of Namibia.

Upington is the nearest big town from the Fish River Canyon but in South Africa. In Upington you can choose accommodation from Upington accommodation online. From Canon Lodge at the Fish River Canyon, you can drive north west in Namibia to Sossusvlei where you can experience another natural wonder. Here you will see the world's highest sand dunes. You will have a choice between the luxury Sossusvlei Lodge or Sossusvlei Desert Lodge which offers self-catering ( self contained ) accommodation at Sossusvlei in Namibia, and which is 4 hours drive from Canon Lodge. It might be advisable to hire a 4x4 from Temba Car Hire due to the very loose sand.

After Sossuvlei your next stop would most likely be Swakopmund which is Namibia's most popular coastal resort. Among the accommodation in Swakopmund is Alte Brucke self-catering ( self contained ) accommodation and The Stiltz which is a luxury lodge in Swakopmund. From Swakopmund you can drive north to the Skeleton Coast. Cape Cross Lodge at the Cape Cross seal colony is the preferred accommodation along this part of the coast. Allow at least 2 days if you drive from Canon Lodge or any other Fish River Canyon lodge to Cape Cross.

Your next stop will certainly be somewhere in Damaraland or Kaokoland which is 3 days drive from Canon Lodge. Palmwag in the west of Damaraland is one of Temba's preferred lodges in an area where you can see both desert elephants and rhinos. If you are more interested in rock paintings and rock formations Twyfelfontein Country Lodge near the petrified forest, or Vingerklip Lodge or Ugab Terrace Lodge overlooking the Vingerklip in Damaraland, might be the place for you.
